If you are planning a holiday, family visit or short business trip to continental Europe, understanding how to apply for Schengen visa from India is one of the first practical steps.

Indian passport holders remain visa-required for short visits to the Schengen Area. A Schengen short-stay visa generally allows eligible travellers to visit for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period, subject to the validity and entries printed on the visa.

The process is not simply “book a VFS appointment and submit documents.” You first need to determine the correct Schengen country responsible for your application. You then need a valid passport, a credible itinerary, accommodation and financial evidence, qualifying travel medical insurance and other supporting documents appropriate to your circumstances. Biometrics are also part of the application process in applicable cases.

There are also two important 2026 developments. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, while ETIAS is scheduled for the last quarter of 2026 but does not apply to Indian passport holders who require a Schengen visa.

Indian travellers comparing Europe with other destinations can also explore WorkAbroad's visa-free countries for Indians and broader immigration guidance.

What Is a Schengen Visa?

A Schengen visa is an entry permit for eligible non-EU nationals making a short, temporary visit of up to 90 days in any 180-day period to the Schengen Area.

Common forms include:

  • Single-entry visa: allows one entry into the Schengen Area.

  • Multiple-entry visa: permits multiple visits during the visa's validity while respecting the permitted stay.

  • Airport Transit Visa: intended only for certain international airport connections and does not permit the traveller to leave the international transit area.

For tourism, visiting friends or relatives, attending short business meetings or similar short trips, applicants typically deal with a short-stay Schengen visa, commonly referred to as a Type C visa.

A short-stay Schengen visa does not grant a general right to work in Europe. Indian professionals looking for employment or relocation need to identify the relevant national work or residence route instead. The EU's India-specific multiple-entry guidance expressly notes that Schengen visas do not provide a right to work.

For longer-term European career planning, see WorkAbroad's guide to the best countries for Indians to live and work in Europe.

Do Indian Citizens Need a Schengen Visa in 2026?

Yes.

India remains on the EU list of countries whose nationals generally require a visa when crossing Schengen external borders.

Holding an Indian passport therefore normally means applying for a Schengen visa before travelling for a short visit.

This is different from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia whose qualifying nationals currently benefit from visa-exempt short visits.

Does a US, UK or Canada Visa Exempt an Indian Passport Holder?

No general EU rule says that an Indian passport holder becomes Schengen visa-exempt merely because they hold a valid:

  • US visa;

  • UK visa;

  • Canadian visa; or

  • residence permit from another non-Schengen country.

Your Indian passport nationality remains relevant to the Schengen visa requirement. India is listed among visa-required nationalities.

There can be separate rules for particular residence statuses, family members or transit situations, so unusual cases should be checked with the responsible consulate.

Which Countries Can You Visit With a Schengen Visa?

As of August 2026, 29 European countries issue Schengen visas: 25 EU Member States plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

EU Schengen Countries

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

Non-EU Schengen Countries

  • Iceland

  • Liechtenstein

  • Norway

  • Switzerland

What About Ireland and Cyprus?

Ireland and Cyprus currently do not issue Schengen visas. They operate their own national visa arrangements.

This means having a Schengen visa does not automatically give an Indian passport holder permission to visit Ireland or Cyprus.

The United Kingdom is also outside the Schengen Area and has its own immigration system.

Which Schengen Country Should You Apply To?

This is one of the most important parts of learning how to apply for Schengen visa from India.

You cannot simply select whichever embassy appears to have:

  • the fastest appointments;

  • the lowest refusal rate;

  • fewer documents; or

  • the easiest online process.

EU guidance establishes rules for determining the responsible consulate.

If You Visit One Schengen Country

Apply through the consulate of that country.

Example:
7-day holiday entirely in France → Apply to France.

If You Visit Multiple Countries

Apply through the country where you will spend the longest period.

Example:

France — 6 nights
Italy — 4 nights

Apply through France.

If You Spend Equal Time in Multiple Countries

Where stays are equal, apply through the country you will visit first.

Example:

France — 4 nights
Italy — 4 nights
First entry — Paris

Apply through France.

Purpose can also matter when determining the genuine main destination in more complex itineraries. The EU Delegation to India describes the main destination in terms of the length or purpose of the stay.

Avoid “Visa Shopping”

Do not modify your itinerary simply to apply through a country you think approves visas more easily.

Your:

  • flights;

  • hotel bookings;

  • travel dates;

  • purpose;

  • cover letter; and

  • application form

should tell one consistent story.

When Can You Apply for a Schengen Visa From India?

EU guidance says an application should generally be submitted:

  • at least 15 days before the intended journey, and

  • no earlier than 6 months before travel.

This does not mean you should wait until day 15.

Appointment availability, document preparation and seasonal demand can add substantial time before the consulate even begins processing the file.

For a planned summer or festive-season trip, beginning preparation well in advance is more sensible than depending on the minimum filing window.

Schengen Visa Requirements for Indian Applicants

There is no single document that guarantees approval.

The visa authority needs enough evidence to assess your identity, travel purpose, financial capacity, accommodation and intention to leave the Schengen Area after the permitted visit.

1. Valid Passport

Under the Visa Code, the travel document should:

  • remain valid for at least three months after your intended departure from the Schengen Area;

  • contain at least two blank pages; and

  • have been issued within the previous 10 years.

This is more precise than the common generic advice that the passport simply needs “six months' validity.”

2. Completed Visa Application Form

Complete the official form applicable to the country processing your application.

Information should match your passport and supporting documents exactly.

3. Compliant Photograph

A recent photograph complying with applicable ICAO/consular standards is required.

4. Proof of Travel Purpose

Depending on the trip, this can include:

  • tourism itinerary;

  • business invitation;

  • family/friend invitation;

  • event documentation;

  • conference registration; or

  • other evidence relevant to the declared purpose.

5. Accommodation Evidence

Examples can include:

  • hotel bookings;

  • invitation/accommodation declaration;

  • host documentation; or

  • other evidence accepted by the destination country.

6. Travel Arrangements

Prepare a credible itinerary consistent with your application.

Avoid presenting contradictory dates across flights, accommodation, insurance and leave approval.

7. Financial Evidence

You need evidence of sufficient means to support the proposed trip.

There is no single universal Schengen bank balance applicable to every Indian applicant.

Financial reference amounts and documentary expectations can differ between countries and circumstances.

8. Evidence of Intention to Return

Authorities can assess whether you intend to leave before your authorised stay ends. Relevant evidence depends on your circumstances and may include employment, studies, family commitments, business responsibilities or other genuine ties.

9. Travel Medical Insurance

Your insurance must meet Schengen requirements, discussed separately below.

10. Additional Country-Specific Documents

The responsible consulate can request additional evidence.

For example, employed, self-employed, student, retired and sponsored applicants can face different documentary requirements.

Documents Required for a Schengen Visa From India

A practical master checklist includes:

Identity Documents

  • Current passport

  • Copies of relevant passport pages

  • Previous passports where requested

  • Recent compliant photographs

  • Completed and signed application form

Travel Evidence

  • Proposed itinerary

  • Flight reservation or transportation evidence where requested

  • Accommodation evidence

  • Travel medical insurance

  • Invitation documents where applicable

Financial Documents

Depending on the consulate and applicant profile:

  • personal bank statements;

  • salary slips;

  • income-tax documents;

  • sponsorship evidence;

  • business financial records; or

  • other proof of sufficient means.

Employment / Professional Evidence

For employees, commonly relevant evidence can include:

  • employment letter;

  • approved leave;

  • salary evidence.

For self-employed applicants, relevant records might include business-registration or financial evidence.

Students, retirees, minors and sponsored travellers should follow the exact checklist published by the responsible consulate or authorised visa centre.

Important

Do not rely on a generic online checklist alone.

The European Commission itself states that additional documents may be requested by consulates.

How Much Bank Balance Is Required for a Schengen Visa From India?

There is no universal figure such as ₹1 lakh, ₹2 lakh or €100 per day that applies to every Schengen application.

EU-level guidance requires evidence of financial means but does not establish one single bank-balance amount for every Schengen state and every traveller.

Individual countries can have their own reference amounts or assessment rules.

Your financial evidence should logically support:

  • trip duration;

  • accommodation;

  • local transportation;

  • meals and daily expenditure;

  • onward/return travel; and

  • other expected costs.

What Matters More Than a Last-Minute Deposit?

A credible financial file is generally easier to understand when funds are:

  • traceable;

  • proportionate to income;

  • consistent with declared employment/business;

  • available for the trip; and

  • supported by explanations where unusual transactions exist.

Do not manufacture a temporary bank balance simply to reach a number seen on a blog.

Check the actual consulate's current financial requirements.

Schengen Travel Insurance Requirement

Travel medical insurance is a formal visa requirement for a standard uniform Schengen visa.

The EU Visa Code requires the insurance to cover expenses arising from:

  • medical repatriation;

  • urgent medical attention;

  • emergency hospital treatment; and

  • death-related repatriation or related covered circumstances.

The policy must be valid throughout the relevant Member States and cover the entire intended stay or transit.

Minimum Coverage

€30,000.

For a multiple-entry visa application, insurance evidence is required for the first intended visit, and travellers remain responsible for appropriate insurance on subsequent trips.

Check that your:

  • name;

  • travel dates;

  • geographic coverage; and

  • policy limit

are clearly shown.

How to Apply for Schengen Visa From India: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Confirm That a Short-Stay Schengen Visa Is the Correct Route

A Schengen visa is for short temporary travel.

If you intend to:

  • work;

  • relocate;

  • study long term; or

  • remain for more than 90 days,

you may need a national immigration route rather than a short-stay Schengen visa.

For example, Indians interested in moving to Germany for employment can separately review WorkAbroad's Germany Opportunity Card guide.

Step 2: Identify the Responsible Schengen Country

Use your genuine itinerary.

Apply to:

  1. the only country you are visiting; or

  2. the country of your longest stay; or

  3. if stays are equal, the first Schengen country you visit.

Step 3: Visit the Official Consular Website

This is another area where applicants often receive misleading advice.

Not every Schengen country uses VFS Global.

Depending on the destination, the application may be handled through:

  • the embassy/consulate directly; or

  • an officially appointed external service provider.

The European Commission links applicants to the official websites of each Schengen country.

Never pay a random agency just because its website ranks above the embassy page.

Step 4: Download the Correct Checklist and Form

Requirements can vary by:

  • destination;

  • purpose;

  • applicant occupation;

  • age;

  • sponsorship;

  • family status.

Use the checklist published for your specific application location and category.

Step 5: Book an Appointment Where Required

EU guidance notes that an appointment may be required before lodging the application.

Appointment systems differ by country.

Step 6: Prepare a Consistent Application File

Check that every document supports the same itinerary.

For example:

Application: 10–18 October
Flights: 10–18 October
Hotels: 10–18 October
Insurance: covers the required journey
Leave approval: matches travel dates

Inconsistency can create avoidable questions.

Step 7: Attend the Appointment and Provide Biometrics

At the application stage, fingerprints are generally collected, subject to specific exemptions.

The Visa Code provides for a photograph and 10 fingerprints for a first biometric application.

Step 8: Pay the Official Visa Fee

The standard adult Schengen visa application fee is €90, while children aged 6–12 generally pay €45.

External visa service-centre charges may apply separately.

Step 9: Wait for the Consular Decision

Normal processing is generally 15 calendar days, although certain cases may take up to 45 days.

Step 10: Check the Visa Sticker Carefully

After receiving your passport, verify:

  • your name;

  • passport number;

  • visa validity dates;

  • number of entries;

  • permitted duration of stay.

A visa's validity period and permitted number of days are not necessarily the same thing.

Schengen Visa Biometrics: Do You Need Fingerprints Every Time?

Not necessarily.

The Visa Code states that where fingerprints from a previous visa application were entered in the Visa Information System less than 59 months before a new application, they can normally be copied to the subsequent application.

However, fingerprints can be collected again when:

  • identity needs verification;

  • previous biometrics cannot immediately be confirmed; or

  • another applicable requirement makes fresh collection necessary.

Therefore, do not assume that having given fingerprints once means you will never need to appear again.

Schengen Visa Fees From India in 2026

Current common EU-level fees are:

Applicant

Visa Fee

Adult

€90

Child aged 6–12

€45

Certain exempt categories

Fee can be waived

Additional fees can apply where an external visa service centre collects the application on behalf of the consulate.

Why We Are Not Giving a Fixed INR Price

The payable INR equivalent can vary with:

  • official exchange-rate calculation;

  • destination country;

  • timing;

  • service-provider charge;

  • optional courier or premium services.

For that reason, a statement such as “Schengen visa costs exactly ₹8,100” can quickly become outdated.

Check the responsible embassy/service-provider's payment page immediately before the appointment.

How Long Does a Schengen Visa Take From India?

The official EU rule is much clearer than generic internet estimates.

Normal Processing

15 calendar days.

Extended Examination

Processing may extend to up to 45 days when more detailed examination or additional documentation is required.

Appointment waiting time is separate from consular processing time.

Therefore, an applicant should distinguish:

Time to get appointment + submission logistics + consular processing + passport return

from the official 15-day decision standard.

Do not treat a blog's “3–6 weeks” figure as a guaranteed official processing time for every embassy.

Can Indians Get a 2-Year or 5-Year Multiple-Entry Schengen Visa?

Yes, qualifying Indian travellers now benefit from a particularly useful visa cascade regime.

In April 2024, the European Commission adopted more favourable multiple-entry visa rules for Indian nationals residing in India and applying in India.

Two-Year Multiple-Entry Visa

An Indian national can potentially be issued a two-year multiple-entry visa after obtaining and lawfully using two Schengen visas within the previous three years, assuming the passport has sufficient validity.

Five-Year Multiple-Entry Visa

The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, again subject to sufficient passport validity.

Important: It Does Not Mean You Can Stay for Years

Even with a five-year multiple-entry visa, short-stay rules still generally limit the traveller to:

90 days within any 180-day period.

And the visa still does not provide a right to work.

This is an important distinction between visa validity and permitted duration of stay.

Salary predictor

Estimate your overseas salary potential

Compare the likely earning range for your target country before shortlisting roles or visa pathways.

Estimated rangeCAD 48,000 - 92,000 / yearBased on healthcare roles with 3-5 years experience.

What Is the 90/180-Day Schengen Rule?

A short-stay Schengen visa allows eligible travel for a maximum of 90 days in any rolling 180-day period.

The 180-day period is not simply January–June or July–December.

It is a rolling calculation.

That matters particularly for travellers holding:

  • one-year visas;

  • two-year multiple-entry visas; or

  • five-year multiple-entry visas.

Multiple visits accumulate.

A long-validity visa therefore does not reset your permitted days every time you enter.

What Is EES and How Does It Affect Indian Travellers in 2026?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is now fully operational across Schengen countries.

It became fully operational on 10 April 2026.

EES digitally records data for relevant non-EU short-stay travellers at Schengen external borders, including:

  • passport/travel-document information;

  • facial image;

  • fingerprints;

  • entry date/location;

  • exit date/location.

Does EES Replace the Schengen Visa?

No.

EES is a border-management system, not a visa.

For an Indian traveller:

Schengen visa = permission required before travel

EES = border registration when entering/exiting, where applicable

You do not submit an EES visa application before your trip.

Do Indian Passport Holders Need ETIAS?

No, not under the standard current Indian passport situation.

ETIAS is designed for visa-exempt travellers.

Indian passport holders remain visa-required for Schengen short stays, so they apply for a Schengen visa rather than ETIAS.

As of 19 August 2026, ETIAS is not yet operational. It is scheduled to begin in the last quarter of 2026, and the EU has said the exact launch date will be announced separately.

This means Indian applicants should ignore websites telling them to “apply for ETIAS before their Schengen visa.”

Why Can a Schengen Visa Application Be Refused?

There is no responsible way to promise that a particular document set will guarantee approval.

EU requirements specifically require evidence concerning:

  • travel purpose;

  • financial means;

  • accommodation; and

  • intention to return home.

Problems can therefore arise when an application fails to establish these points clearly.

Common practical risks include:

Inconsistent Itinerary

Hotel bookings say one thing while the application form says another.

Applying Through the Wrong Country

Your genuine longest/main destination is Italy, but you apply through another embassy simply because an appointment was available sooner.

Weak or Unexplained Financial Evidence

Large unexplained deposits shortly before submission can make the financial story harder to understand.

Incorrect Insurance

The policy does not meet Schengen-wide coverage or minimum insurance conditions.

Passport Issues

Insufficient validity, pages or passport age can affect eligibility.

Unclear Purpose

Generic or contradictory supporting evidence can make the purpose of travel difficult to establish.

Missing Documents

Consulates can request additional documents beyond the general list.

What Should You Do If Your Schengen Visa Is Rejected?

A refusal does not mean you should immediately submit the same application again.

Under EU guidance, if an application is rejected, you must be told:

  • why it was rejected, and

  • how to submit an appeal.

Read the refusal notice carefully.

Then decide whether the more appropriate route is to:

  • appeal according to the responsible country's procedure; or

  • make a new application after correcting the identified problem.

There is no value in changing only the cover letter while leaving the underlying weakness unchanged.

Is There an “Easiest Schengen Country” for Indians?

You should not choose a Schengen country based on an online ranking of approval rates.

The correct application country is determined by your actual travel plans, not whichever consulate appears statistically easier.

European Commission statistics can be useful for understanding overall visa demand, but they should not be used to justify applying through the wrong destination.

In 2025, Schengen consulates received more than 12 million short-stay visa applications globally, including about 1.15 million applications from India, making India the third-largest source market after China and Türkiye.

This volume shows why India is an important Schengen visa market, but it does not create a legitimate “easy embassy” shortcut.

Can You Work in Europe on a Schengen Tourist Visa?

A Schengen short-stay visa should not be treated as a general European work permit.

The EU's special multiple-entry rules for Indians explicitly state that Schengen visas do not grant the right to work.

If your objective is to work abroad, identify the correct national employment or skilled-migration route.

For example, WorkAbroad's Germany Opportunity Card guide explains a completely different immigration pathway for eligible professionals seeking opportunities in Germany.

Common Schengen Visa Mistakes Indians Should Avoid

Before submitting, avoid these common errors:

  1. Applying through a country that is not your genuine main destination.

  2. Using different dates across the form, hotels, flights and insurance.

  3. Assuming every Schengen country uses VFS Global.

  4. Buying insurance below €30,000 coverage.

  5. Assuming there is one universal minimum bank balance.

  6. Depositing borrowed funds solely to inflate the statement without an explanation.

  7. Using a passport that does not satisfy validity rules.

  8. Believing a US, UK or Canada visa automatically exempts you.

  9. Confusing EES with the visa application process.

  10. Applying for ETIAS even though Indians require a Schengen visa.

  11. Assuming a two- or five-year multiple-entry visa permits continuous residence.

  12. Using a tourist visa for unauthorised employment.

A credible application is usually one in which the form, documents and real travel plan all agree.

Final Schengen Visa Checklist for Indian Applicants

Conclusion

Understanding how to apply for Schengen visa from India in 2026 starts with one fundamental decision: applying to the correct Schengen country.

Once that is established, prepare a consistent file covering passport eligibility, trip purpose, accommodation, financial capacity, intention to return and valid €30,000 travel medical insurance.

The standard adult visa fee is currently €90, normal processing is 15 calendar days, and a more detailed examination can extend the decision period to 45 days.

Indian travellers with an established Schengen history can also benefit from the EU's special cascade system, potentially moving from a two-year to a five-year multiple-entry visa while still respecting the 90/180-day stay rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. India remains on the EU list of visa-required nationalities, so ordinary Indian passport holders generally need a Schengen visa before making a short visit to the Schengen Area.

If visiting one country, apply there. If visiting several, apply to the country where you will spend the longest period. If the stays are equal, apply to the first Schengen country you will visit.

There is no single EU-wide fixed bank-balance amount applicable to every applicant. You must demonstrate sufficient financial means, while destination countries can have their own reference amounts and documentary rules.

Schengen travel medical insurance must provide at least €30,000 in coverage, be valid throughout the relevant Member States and cover the intended period of stay or transit.

The standard EU-level fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6–12. External visa-centre service charges can apply separately.

Normal processing is generally 15 calendar days. It may take up to 45 days where detailed examination or additional documents are required.

Not always. Previous fingerprints stored in VIS can normally be reused where they were first collected less than 59 months before the new application, although fresh biometrics can still be required in certain circumstances.

No general Schengen rule provides that exemption. Indian nationals remain on the visa-required list regardless of simply holding one of those visas.

Qualifying Indian nationals residing and applying in India can benefit from the EU's visa cascade. A two-year multiple-entry visa may follow two lawfully used visas in the preceding three years, and it can normally be followed by a five-year visa if passport validity permits.

ETIAS is for visa-exempt travellers. Standard Indian passport holders require a Schengen visa instead. ETIAS is scheduled for the last quarter of 2026, and its exact launch date had not yet been announced as of 19 August 2026.
