For skilled Indian professionals planning long-term settlement, the New Zealand Skilled Migrant Visa is one of the main residence pathways to understand in 2026. The system is no longer simply an old-style points race based on age, overseas experience and qualifications. Current Immigration New Zealand rules focus much more strongly on your New Zealand job or job offer, qualification, occupational registration, income and—in several pathways—skilled work already completed in New Zealand.

The Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa allows successful applicants to live, work and study in New Zealand indefinitely. You may also include an eligible partner and dependent children aged 24 or younger. Current Immigration New Zealand information lists the application cost from NZD 6,450 and requires the principal applicant to be 55 or younger.

The most important step is identifying which SMC pathway actually matches your profile before spending money on qualification assessments, English tests or migration services.

How the New Zealand Skilled Migrant Visa Works in 2026

New Zealand currently provides three Skilled Migrant Category pathways:

  1. Points-based pathway

  2. Skilled Work Experience pathway

  3. Trades and Technician pathway

You need to qualify under only one of these routes. Immigration New Zealand states that all SMC applicants must normally have a skilled job or skilled job offer in New Zealand, satisfy the applicable pay requirement, meet health and character standards and demonstrate English ability.

The official Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa page should therefore be your primary reference before submitting an Expression of Interest.

For Indians, this means the logical order is usually:

profile assessment → eligible occupation/job → accredited employer → pathway check → evidence preparation → EOI → invitation → residence application

Do not begin by calculating points while ignoring the job requirement.

Basic Eligibility for Indian Applicants

Although the three pathways differ, several core conditions apply broadly.

Age

You must be 55 years old or younger when you apply.

This is a fixed threshold for the current Skilled Migrant Category.

Skilled Job or Job Offer

You must generally be:

  • already working in New Zealand in a skilled job, or

  • holding an eligible skilled job offer.

The employer must be accredited.

The job must normally be full-time, meaning at least 30 hours per week, and satisfy contract-duration and remuneration requirements for the pathway you are using.

Health

Applicants must meet New Zealand health requirements.

Depending on your circumstances, Immigration New Zealand may require medical examinations and chest X-rays.

Character

Resident-visa applicants aged 17 or older normally need police certificates from countries of citizenship and countries where they have spent the relevant period required under INZ rules.

English

The principal applicant must speak and understand English.

Current accepted test thresholds include:

Test

Principal Applicant Minimum

IELTS

Overall 6.5

TOEFL iBT

79

PTE Academic

58

B2 First

176

OET

C+ in all four skills

Test results normally need to be no more than two years old when the application is submitted, subject to specific exceptions such as certain occupational-registration cases.

The 6-Point System Explained

The points-based route requires six skilled resident points.

The current system is significantly simpler than older New Zealand immigration points schemes because you do not collect points from dozens of categories.

Instead, you claim points from one main skill category:

  • qualification,

  • New Zealand occupational registration, or

  • income.

If that category does not give you all six points, you may add eligible skilled work experience completed in New Zealand.

You cannot freely combine qualification points with income points and occupational-registration points.

The official SMC pathway guidance explains that applicants use one skill category and, where necessary, eligible New Zealand skilled employment to reach six points.

Qualification Points

Indian applicants often expect their degree alone to generate enough points. That is not always the case.

For international qualifications, the current points structure includes:

Overseas Qualification

Points

Level 10 Doctoral Degree

6

Level 9 Master’s Degree

5

Level 8 Honours Degree / PG Diploma / PG Certificate

4

Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree

4

Non-degree qualifications at Level 7 or below do not normally generate qualification points under this route.

This creates an important difference between applicants.

Example: Indian Bachelor’s Degree

Suppose your Indian bachelor’s degree is assessed as equivalent to an eligible NZQCF Level 7 qualification.

You may receive 4 points.

You would then need eligible New Zealand skilled work experience to reach six.

Example: Indian Master’s Degree

If an eligible overseas master’s degree is assessed at Level 9, it may provide 5 points.

You may then need one additional point from qualifying skilled work experience in New Zealand.

Example: Doctorate

An eligible Level 10 doctoral qualification can provide all 6 points without needing New Zealand work-experience points.

The exact assessment of an Indian qualification is therefore critical.

Do Indian Qualifications Need NZQA Assessment?

Often, yes.

Immigration New Zealand states that an overseas qualification used for points generally needs to:

  • have an International Qualification Assessment from NZQA, or

  • appear on the List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment, where applicable.

NZQA’s current Standard International Qualification Assessment fee is NZD 445 for evaluation of one qualification. Other specialised assessment products cost more.

Candidates can review the NZQA International Qualification Assessment fees before paying for an assessment.

Do not assume that an Indian MBA, B.Tech, diploma or postgraduate course automatically maps to the New Zealand level you expect.

Occupational Registration Points

Certain regulated occupations can generate skilled-resident points through New Zealand occupational registration.

Current SMC rules allocate points according to the minimum years of training or experience required to obtain the registration.

Registration Requirement

Points

6 years

6

5 years

5

4 years

4

2 years

3

Examples may include regulated occupations such as certain health, accounting, electrical, plumbing or other registered professions, depending on the approved registration list.

This pathway can be particularly relevant to Indian nurses, doctors, engineers in regulated contexts, electricians and other professionals whose occupations require formal registration.

However, simply having an Indian licence does not mean you automatically receive New Zealand registration.

You must meet the requirements of the relevant New Zealand registration authority.

Estimated rangeCAD 48,000 - 92,000 / yearBased on healthcare roles with 3-5 years experience.

Income Points

Applicants can also qualify through sufficiently high remuneration.

Current SMC rules state that the income route starts at 1.5 times the SMC wage threshold.

The present SMC wage threshold for relevant ANZSCO skill-level 1–3 work is NZD 35.00 per hour. Accordingly, current income-point thresholds include:

Income Level

Points

1.5 × threshold

3

2 × threshold

4

3 × threshold

6

The current three-times threshold shown by Immigration New Zealand is NZD 105 per hour.

Candidates should use the official SMC wage-threshold page because wage thresholds and historical work-experience rates can change.

Do not calculate eligibility using an old blog post or a two-year-old median-wage figure.

How New Zealand Work Experience Adds Points

Under the points-based New Zealand Skilled Migrant Visa, eligible skilled work experience completed in New Zealand can add up to three points.

Current rules provide:

Eligible Skilled Work in New Zealand

Additional Points

1 year

1

1.5 years

2

2 years

3

The job must meet the required skill and pay conditions.

This is especially important for Indian applicants with bachelor’s or master’s qualifications who do not receive six points from the qualification alone.

For many candidates, the realistic strategy becomes:

work visa first → skilled New Zealand employment → residence eligibility later

WorkAbroad’s New Zealand jobs for Indian applicants can help candidates understand employer-led opportunities before planning residence.

Skilled Work Experience Pathway

The current SMC is not limited to the six-point route.

A second pathway focuses on applicants whose professional strength comes primarily from work experience.

The Skilled Work Experience pathway generally requires:

  • an eligible ANZSCO skill-level 1–3 job or job offer,

  • the required remuneration,

  • at least three years of relevant experience, and

  • an additional two years of qualifying skilled employment in New Zealand.

Immigration New Zealand describes this pathway as suitable for people who developed their skills substantially through employment rather than relying mainly on formal qualifications.

This route can be relevant to experienced Indian professionals whose formal qualification does not generate enough SMC points.

However, the New Zealand work component remains crucial.

Trades and Technician Pathway

The third route is particularly relevant to skilled tradespeople and technicians.

To qualify, applicants generally need:

  • a job or job offer in an eligible trade or technician occupation,

  • a relevant qualification,

  • at least four years of post-qualification relevant work experience, and

  • the required New Zealand skilled-work component.

Current Immigration New Zealand guidance states that the pathway recognises applicants who developed their skills through a combination of technical qualification and employment.

This can potentially be important to Indian:

  • electricians,

  • automotive technicians,

  • mechanical technicians,

  • construction tradespeople,

  • engineering technicians,

  • other eligible trade professionals.

Your occupation must appear on the relevant eligible list. Having a trade certificate alone does not guarantee residence eligibility.

Skilled Job Requirements Matter More Than Many Applicants Expect

A common mistake is to focus entirely on points.

The job itself must qualify.

Immigration New Zealand currently requires skilled employment to be with an accredited employer and normally at least 30 hours a week.

The role must also satisfy:

  • occupation requirements,

  • contract-duration requirements,

  • skill-level rules, and

  • applicable SMC remuneration thresholds.

A high qualification with an unsuitable job does not automatically create residence eligibility.

Similarly, a genuine New Zealand job offer does not guarantee the visa if the role fails to meet the relevant SMC conditions.

Green List vs Skilled Migrant Category

Do not automatically choose SMC just because you are a skilled professional.

New Zealand also has Green List residence pathways.

The Green List identifies shortage occupations and separates them broadly into:

  • Tier 1: Straight to Residence

  • Tier 2: Work to Residence

For Tier 1 roles, eligible candidates may qualify for Straight to Residence when occupation, registration, qualification, employer and pay conditions are met.

Tier 2 roles generally require qualifying New Zealand employment before residence.

The official New Zealand Green List residence pathway should therefore be checked before deciding which route to pursue.

An Indian nurse, engineer or specialist might discover that a Green List route is more direct than SMC.

What About the Accredited Employer Work Visa?

The AEWV is a temporary employment visa rather than the Skilled Migrant Category residence visa.

However, it can be part of the practical journey toward residence.

Many Indian applicants first obtain an eligible New Zealand job with an accredited employer, move under a work route, accumulate qualifying New Zealand experience and later assess SMC or another residence pathway.

WorkAbroad’s New Zealand work visa guide from India covers the employment stage separately.

Do not confuse:

AEWV = work permission

with

SMC = residence pathway

They serve different purposes.

English Requirements for Indian Applicants

Many Indian candidates will satisfy the English requirement through an approved test.

Current principal-applicant scores include:

  • IELTS overall 6.5

  • TOEFL iBT 79

  • PTE Academic 58

  • B2 First 176

  • OET C+ in all four skills

Immigration New Zealand currently requires relevant test results to have been obtained at an approved test centre rather than through an at-home test option.

Do not book an English test purely because an agent says “IELTS is compulsory.”

Applicants may have other permitted ways of demonstrating English depending on citizenship, study and qualifications.

Check your own case.

Documents Indian Applicants Should Prepare

A well-organised file reduces avoidable delays.

Common evidence can include:

  • Passport

  • Recent photograph

  • Birth certificate where requested

  • Indian qualification certificates

  • Academic transcripts

  • NZQA IQA where needed

  • New Zealand occupational registration where relevant

  • Job offer

  • Signed employment agreement

  • Detailed job description

  • Salary evidence

  • New Zealand work-experience evidence

  • English-language evidence

  • Police clearance certificates

  • Medical examination evidence

  • Partner documents

  • Dependent-child documents

If you are claiming points for a qualification, income or occupational registration, you need evidence supporting those exact claims.

Do not claim points first and plan to find proof later.

Estimated rangeCAD 48,000 - 92,000 / yearBased on healthcare roles with 3-5 years experience.

Police Clearance and Character Requirements

For a resident visa, Immigration New Zealand generally requires police certificates for applicants aged 17 or older.

You may need police certificates from:

  • countries of citizenship, and

  • other countries where you spent 12 months or more over the relevant ten-year period.

Police certificates normally need to be less than six months old when submitted.

Indian applicants should therefore plan the PCC timing carefully.

Obtaining it too early may create validity problems if the rest of the residence application takes longer than expected.

Application Cost

Current Immigration New Zealand information lists the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa cost from NZD 6,450.

This is not necessarily the total migration expense.

Possible additional costs can include:

  • English test

  • NZQA assessment

  • police certificates

  • medical examinations

  • document translation

  • professional registration

  • relocation

  • adviser charges if you voluntarily use one

Always separate the government application fee from optional third-party services.

How to Apply for the New Zealand Skilled Migrant Visa From India

The process becomes easier to understand when broken into decisions rather than paperwork.

Step 1: Check Your Occupation and Residence Route

First compare:

  • SMC,

  • Green List,

  • relevant work-to-residence options.

Do not assume SMC is your best route.

Step 2: Calculate Your SMC Eligibility

If using the points-based pathway, determine whether your strongest category is:

  • qualification,

  • occupational registration, or

  • income.

Then calculate whether New Zealand skilled work is needed to reach six points.

Step 3: Check Your Qualification

Determine whether you need an NZQA IQA.

Step 4: Secure the Right New Zealand Employment

You need an eligible skilled job or offer with an accredited employer under current SMC requirements.

Candidates can use WorkAbroad’s overseas job listings and visa-sponsored job hub while comparing legitimate employer-led opportunities.

Step 5: Prepare English Evidence

Take an approved language test if your circumstances require one.

Step 6: Submit an Expression of Interest

The EOI tells Immigration New Zealand which pathway you are using and why you believe you meet the requirements.

Submitting an EOI is not the same as receiving residence.

Step 7: Receive an Invitation to Apply

If your EOI satisfies the required criteria, Immigration New Zealand may invite you to submit the residence application.

Step 8: Upload Full Supporting Evidence

Provide the documents supporting every material claim.

Step 9: Complete INZ Assessment

Immigration New Zealand may request:

  • additional documents,

  • salary evidence,

  • qualification information,

  • original identity documents, or

  • an interview.

Step 10: Receive the Decision

Meeting the six-point threshold does not guarantee approval.

You must satisfy all visa requirements and provide credible evidence.

Can You Include Your Family?

Yes.

Current SMC rules allow eligible applicants to include:

  • a partner, and

  • dependent children aged 24 or younger.

Family members need to satisfy relevant relationship, health, character and English conditions.

Partners or dependent children aged 16 or older may need to demonstrate English or, where permitted, pre-purchase English tuition if they do not meet the required standard.

Do not assume that approval of the principal applicant automatically waives family requirements.

Major Mistakes Indian Applicants Make

Using the Old Points System

Old articles discussing 160 points or points for age and general overseas work experience can be obsolete.

Use current 2026 SMC rules.

Assuming Overseas Experience Adds Points Directly

Under the points-based route, ordinary Indian work experience is not simply added as general points the way many older systems worked.

Mixing Skill Categories

You cannot freely combine qualification + income + registration points.

Ignoring the Accredited Employer Requirement

The employer side of the application matters.

Paying for a “Guaranteed Job + PR Package”

Neither a recruiter nor an immigration adviser can guarantee residence approval.

Confusing Green List and SMC

They are separate residence mechanisms.

Getting an IQA Before Checking Whether It Is Needed

An assessment costs money. Check whether your qualification is exempt before ordering one.

Final Advice for Indian Applicants

The New Zealand Skilled Migrant Visa can provide a strong residence pathway for qualified Indian professionals, but the current system rewards a much more specific profile than older points-based schemes.

Start by identifying your exact occupation and New Zealand employment prospects. Then compare the Points-based, Skilled Work Experience and Trades and Technician pathways. If your occupation is on the Green List, compare that route as well before committing to SMC.

Do not buy an NZQA assessment, English test package or migration service simply because someone says it is mandatory for everyone. Each applicant’s qualification, registration, employment and residence pathway can be different.

Use current Immigration New Zealand rules, verify the accredited employer, document every point you claim and treat six points as the eligibility threshold—not a guarantee of residence approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Under the points-based SMC pathway, applicants need six skilled resident points. These come primarily from one category—qualification, occupational registration or income—and, where necessary, eligible skilled work experience completed in New Zealand can be added.

You may prepare parts of the process from India, but current SMC rules generally require you to be working in or hold an eligible skilled job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer. Your specific pathway then determines the remaining qualification, experience, pay and evidence requirements.

Under the current SMC framework, applicants generally need to be working in a skilled New Zealand job or have an eligible job offer from an accredited employer. The job must satisfy the applicable hours, duration, skill and pay conditions.

No. An eligible overseas Level 7 bachelor’s degree currently provides four points. An applicant relying on that qualification would generally need eligible New Zealand skilled-work points to reach six.

An eligible overseas Level 9 master’s qualification generally provides five points under the current qualification table. The applicant may therefore require an additional eligible New Zealand skilled-work point.

For applicants using IELTS to demonstrate English under skilled residence rules, the principal applicant currently needs an overall score of at least 6.5. Other approved tests include TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, B2 First and OET.

Many overseas qualifications require an International Qualification Assessment before they can be used for SMC qualification points, unless the qualification falls under an applicable assessment exemption. Check the current INZ and NZQA requirements before ordering an IQA.

The Skilled Migrant Category grants a Resident Visa, which allows you to live, work and study in New Zealand indefinitely subject to visa conditions. A Permanent Resident Visa is a later immigration status with different requirements and travel conditions.

It can be for certain occupations. Tier 1 Green List roles can offer a Straight to Residence pathway, while Tier 2 occupations may lead to Work to Residence after qualifying employment. Check your exact occupation before choosing SMC.

Immigration New Zealand currently lists the SMC Resident Visa cost from NZD 6,450. Other expenses such as NZQA assessment, English testing, professional registration, medical checks, police certificates and relocation may be additional.
